The Oban Times

Craven behaviour

- MARTIN LAING mlaing@obantimes.co.uk

Honestly, some people simply beggar belief.

I took this photograph in Argyll Street a couple of weeks ago. Some craven individual had dumped a load of unwanted furniture – including bed frames and an old mattress – in the street and just left it there.

For those who may not know Oban very well, Argyll Street is a main thoroughfare in the heart of the town centre, just off George Street and the bay.

Who could possibly think this is acceptable? I would urge anyone who knows who was responsible to contact the police and report the culprit.

I should hasten to add that the rubbish has since been removed but that doesn’t alter the fact that it shouldn’t have happened in the first place.

And I’m not the only one concerned about this issue. Andrew Spence from BID4Oban emailed me last week to say: ‘Further to your column regarding litter, BID4Oban are becoming increasingly frustrated at the state of certain areas. There have been numerous complaints from our levy-payers.

‘We are continually being advised that this is down to staffing issues. We have correspondence going back over a year and while there were some improvements these were not sustained.’

With the tourist season imminent, this is a problem that be be addressed urgently.
