Binman’s calendar puts focus on Mull charities
Mull binman Colin Morrison, whose online snapshots of home have become a global hit, has revealed six charities in the frame to benefit from his 2020 calendar.
The 48-year-old, who has been working the world’s most scenic rubbish round for more than a decade, originally ordered just 500 copies of the calendars featuring his best shots of stunning Mull, but they sold out in just one day. Due to popular demand, including far flung requests from New Zealand and America, he has now ordered 1,500 more.
The extra calendars will be available in Mull shops soon, and Colin’s chosen charities in line for a share of money raised are Tobermory’s Christmas lights and New Year fireworks, the island’s hospital – which looked after his dad – Tobermory pipe band, the Army Cadets and Dervaig School playground project.
‘It’s thanks to all the support I’ve had from about 30 of the island’s businesses that I’ve been able to make the calendars and the money will all be going back into the community,’ said Colin, adding: ‘I’m hoping to get them into the shops in time for people to get them as Christmas presents.’
Chairperson of Dervaig Primary School Parent Council Tracy Mayo said: ‘It’s brilliant Colin has thought of our playground project, it’s very much appreciated and extremely kind of him.
‘The wider community is also being a big help. We’re grateful for any support and donations.’
Colin, from Tobermory, who now has thousands of Facebook followers, always has his phone handy on teabreaks ready to capture all the island’s glory whatever the weather.
‘I’m spoiled for choice most days, whatever the weather,’ he said.
‘Mull and Iona are beautiful all year round; although the weather’s been kind to us this year, so I’ve been trying to post a picture every few days or so on my Facebook page,’ said Colin, who only started taking photos when he got a ‘half-decent’ phone.
Pictures posted on A binman’s view of Mull and Iona this weekend were shots from the Dervaig bin run, taking in blue skies over Croig and Cailaich.
Colin’s growing fan base around the world also includes the House of Commons. Argyll and Bute MP Brendan O’Hara sent him a personal thank you letter for having ‘hugely boosted Mull’s visibility’.
As he hails from Tobermory, the bustling harbour town wins when it comes to the perfect picture spot, but Aros Mains is another firm favourite.
