Bucket list for little ones proves to be a huge hit with Kilninver family

-

The arrival of this book could not have come at a better time – just at the start of the October school holidays, writes Iain Gatward.

Starting with a list of 500 ‘adventures’, Scottish brothers Ollie and Harry Ferguson set out to live life to its fullest, initially sharing their escapades through their Facebook page, The days are just packed, and now through this hardbacked book.

Adventures

Ollie and Harry’s Marvellous Adventures provided the perfect opportunity to help occupy a few days of the holidays, as well as creating lots of laughs and have some fun with the kids.

Overall, we loved this book as a family and had great fun trying to recreate some of the adventures suggested. We went through it with our kids and let them pick what they wanted to do at the beginning of the holidays, then did our best to keep up with their enthusiasm.

A definite highlight was the Megapault and hot chocolate on the stove outdoors.

The next project is the giant paper plane – once we get our hands on some big cardboard boxes. In fact, the megapault is still going strong and has been a source of fun for anyone who has visited the house in recent weeks, firing crab apples into the field – thank goodness for a bumper crop!

Our only slight issue with the book is that some of the activities perhaps have a higher cost than similar books we’ve had in the past.

Things like underwater cameras and the logistics/ cost of sending a camera into space were a bit beyond what we could manage for a half term break!

Other than that, though, it is a great book with plenty of entertaining suggestions and loads of scope to adapt to materials/opportunities more suitable to your settings. It also covers issues around safety very well and is written in a very family-friendly style.

Christmas

So, our family would certainly recommend the book and we look forward to working our way through the things we didn’t get around to in the holidays – never a dull moment and it would definitely make a great Christmas gift for friends and family.

Ollie and Harry’s Marvellous Adventures by Ollie and Harry Ferguson is published by WW Norton and is available from all good bookshops.
