Oban man to run Fort to Oban for Martyn’s Monday Club

-

Before running a marathon, people train for months and months, but one Oban man has given himself just four weeks to run almost two, writes David McPhee.

Innes Hughes has set himself the mammoth task of running from Fort William to Oban, almost 45 miles, in a bid to raise money for Martyn’s Monday Club.

Innes originally wanted to carry out the challenge in 2017 after three months of training, however, the month before he was to set off, he was involved in a car accident.

He said the accident put him off running something of that magnitude, adding: ‘But it has bugged me ever since that I never did it. So I’ve decided within the last few weeks that I’m going to run it but this time with only a month to train.’

Innes currently runs around six miles every other day and says this challenge will take everything he has, and more.

‘This will be something completely out of my comfort zone and will be single-handedly the hardest thing I have ever done by a long shot,’ he said.

The 21-year-old will be setting off at 5am and aims to arrive in Oban around 5pm on the final Saturday of Oban Winter Festival, November 23. He chose to raise money for Martyn’s Monday Club, a mental health support group, as he admits he has suffered his own ‘ups and downs’.

He said: ‘I’ll be raising money for Martyn’s Monday Club – a fantastic Oban support group for people who feel like they need help in any sense. So who better to raise money for than a charity I can completely connect with.’

So far Innes has raised more than £300 for the charity.
