SOMETHING SPECIAL

-

Someone special deserves something special – that is a universally accepted fact at Christmas time.

So where is all this ‘special’ going to come from? It can be a headache finding the perfect gift, even more so if you are fighting your way around a big city’s shops.

Look around you – we have some wonderful ideas here on our doorsteps, or just down the road or on an island.

Gifts fall into the big three: possess, consume or experience.

For a lasting gift we have some incredible gift shops and clothing shops here in the West Highlands; shops which understand local (climate) needs.

We have shops selling well-chosen ranges of jewellery, much of it made in the region.

Or gift shops and galleries where the products on sale are carefully selected by an independent owner and not what someone at the head office of a multi-national decided 18 months ago.

Do not forget our outdoor and sports shops; the owners are usually involved in the activity themselves and know what products are best suited here.

Gifts to consume are always welcome – whether that is a local whisky, gin or beer, one of the many high quality foods made here or a freezer or fridge full of fresh produce. Incredible locally-produced soaps, candles, scents and potions are also welcome. Forget the old jokes about bubble bath, gloves and socks – when they are handmade or knitted in the Highlands, they are brilliant and extra thoughtful.

And as for gifts to experience, where do we start? You can be pampered in a spa or salon and yes, men too. You can be dining out or taking afternoon tea, a distillery tour and tasting or taking part in an adventurous activity. Remember many of the national ‘experience’ gifts involve travelling miles and staying overnight so it makes sense to choose something local.
