Mum says thank you to Marie Curie
Lismore candlemaker Hazel MacCormick has handed over a £400 cheque to Marie Curie in loving memory of her farmer husband.
Hazel has been selling her lavender-scented candles to raise awareness of the support and care the charity gives across Oban and Argyll.
The mum-of-two, whose farmer husband John died from cancer last year, is selling her hand-poured Soy candles to help boost the charity’s funds as a thank you.
On what would have been her husband’s 50th birthday on August 15, she officially launched the special Gift of Love candle in his name. John was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour in February 2016 and lost his battle just 15 months later. Marie Curie nurses helped bring the family comfort during his final months.
The fundraising candles, costing £8, with half of the proceeds going directly to Marie Curie, will be on sale at Christmas markets, including the Oban Winter Festival.
Hazel said: ‘I’ve had a massive response to the candles both online and at the markets and agricultural shows that I have attended. I have had the privilege to meet many people who have had similar experiences to myself and everyone singing the praises of Marie Curie. They really do bring light to the darkest hour. It really brought it home to me just how many families have been touched by cancer.’
Fundraisers will be collecting at Tesco on Thursday December 12 and in Homebase, Lidl, Aldi and Superdrug on Saturday December 14.
