Former Oban man celebrates 100th birthday
Former Oban resident Tom Lennox celebrated his 100th birthday at the end of October with a lunch in the Royal George Hotel, Perth.
Tom settled in Oban after the war (having been based at Oban with 210 Squadron) to raise his family with his wife Mary (nee Munro) from Oban.
He was employed as service manager (and ambulance driver) at Munro’s Garage, Breadalbane Street (owned by his father-in-law), and subsequently at Wilson’s Garage, Airds Place.
He is a long-standing member of Oban Parish Church and a founder member of the Oban War and Peace Museum and a regular watch keeper.
He supported the various initiatives in Oban to commemorate the fallen RAF personnel, and for many years he served on the management committee of the North Argyll Eventide Home.
Tom, who had to move from his house, Dalrigh, Oban, in 2016 after he could no longer live alone, is pictured, top, with his family at the party.
Eighty guests attended the day – including five children, 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren – aged 93 to two months.
Tom, inset, received a card from Her Majesty The Queen, a telegram from the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and a letter from the head of the RAF in Scotland.
As well as the celebration with family, a concert was held to celebrate Tom’s 100th at Balhousie Luncarty Care Home on his actual birthday (22.10.19), with music provided by Music in Hospitals and Care Scotland, who played some of his favourite tunes.
