Meeting to discuss jetty at Strontian

The Sunart Community Company recently took ownership of the land and jetty in Strontian and, after discussion within the Loch Sunart Development Working Group, a public meeting was held in Strontian Village Hall last week to present the proposed ideas for development so far and begin wider consultation with the community.

The jetty and slipway both require repair work, as does the land around the jetty, which includes a small amount of parking and a currently unused shed.

As well as being a fairly busy area for loch users, sitting as it does at the mouth of Loch Sunart, it is regularly used as an access point for wild swimmers. It also marks the gateway to Strontian for anyone arriving from the Corran ferry direction.

Proposals for development include various options of jetty or pontoon to allow easier access to and from boats at differing tide levels. There are resident and visitor moorings on the loch which are well used and this would both improve the offering and attract more users.

Discussion over use of the current shed, with either improvement or replacement, also took place, with suggestions including changing rooms, toilet and shower facilities, secure locker spaces for swimmers, an information point or viewing area all put forward as possibilities.

Some of these were ruled out as impractical or requiring large amounts of upkeep.
