Hundreds enter Rotary card competition
The Rotary Club of Oban has just run their popular primary schools Christmas card competition with a staggering 627 entries from 10 different primary schools throughout the area.
The competition is a great favourite and highlights the fantastic imagination and artistic talents of our wonderful young pupils.
President Douglas Small paid particular thanks to all the heads, teachers and classroom assistants for all their enthusiasm in giving time to their pupils to participate in the event.
He said: ‘Without the support of our head teachers, teachers and support staff, this event would not be possible, so on behalf of Oban Rotary, I would like to warmly thank all those who took part at the sharp end of the coloured pencils and glitter as well as all those behind the scenes.’
Rotary youth convener Alan Hoar organised the competition this year and as usual the competition was split into two categories, P1-P3 and P4-P7.
The competition was judged by former Oban High School art teachers Val Hamilton and Val Leckie, who are now art and design teachers at the Rockfield Centre.
Val Hamilton said: ‘It was a very high standard of entry this year and a tough job to pick the winners, but we got there. We just have to watch out for the small mountain of glitter ... it gets everywhere!’ The P1-P3 winners were: Riley Wallace (St Columba’s) and Chaya Wesley (Easdale). The P4-P7 winners: Erika Baines (Barcaldine) and Freya Felgate (Park).
As competition winners, Riley and Chaya had a wonderful ride in Santa’s sleigh at the Reindeer Parade, and Erika and Freya did a fine job in turning on the Christmas lights to much fanfare in Argyll Square.
Winners certificates were designed and printed by Rotarian past-president Ronnie Neil, a renowned architect.
Another memorable Christmas card competition enjoyed by all. Well done to everyone who took part.
