Benderloch hub celebrates 100 years of fun and activity

- By Fiona Scott fscott@obantimes.co.uk

Benderloch's Victory Hall is celebrating its centenary this year and to mark the occasion its hard working committee is putting together a calendar of events to suit all tastes.

January is Historical month and to get the ball rolling, Bob McCulloch will be in residence tonight (Thursday January 16) with his Old Benderloch slideshow.

Entry is by donation, with tea, coffee and homebaking included. The show starts at 7.30pm.

February celebrates Musical activities with Celtic Connection award-winning quartet GNOSS appearing on Friday February 14, while Sport is the theme in March.

Opened in 1920, the original hall still functions and is now used as a 'chill out' reading room and makes an ideal setting for more intimate performances.

A larger hall was added to the building in 1999, along with toilets, a kitchen, a stage, and a bar for functions.

Such is the versatility of the venue, it is often affectionately referred to as the Benderloch Palladium.

Victory Hall committee chairman Hamish Isaac said: 'Both areas are fully used and there is something going on in one hall or the other most days.

'To reflect this activity, we have an event planned for every month of 2020 alongside our usual activities.

'We are looking to keep the profile of the hall prominent for our centenary year and have tried to organise something to suit all ages and tastes.

'With that in mind, we look forward to welcoming old and new visitors throughout this landmark period in the history of the hall.'

Other events planned during 2020 include a bowls night, a family ceilidh, an arts and crafts exhibition, a quiz night, a horticultural show, Bookends book festival, a badminton evening and an evening with local politicians to commemorate the halls’ use as a polling station.

Details of all these events will be published in The Oban Times and on the Victory Hall, Benderloch Facebook page nearer the time.
