VIEW FROM THE CHAMBER
Dr Liz Cameron, the chief executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, popped in for a virtual cuppa with Lochaber Chamber of Commerce members at last week’s online Chamber Chat.
Dr Cameron is one of the most influential people in the Scottish business community and as head of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce network, represents the views and needs of over 12,000 businesses from 30 Chambers of Commerce.
Previously a business owner herself, Dr Cameron understands the needs of business across the range of sectors represented in the Chamber network and along with her team, works tirelessly to make sure that governments in Holyrood and Westminster are aware of the needs of Scottish business.
This close working relationship with government and key agencies has never been more vital to Scottish business. Through the Chamber network, businesses here in Lochaber (whatever their size and whatever the sector) have the ability to make sure that their voice is heard by those making the decisions that affect them.
During last week’s conversation, Dr Cameron highlighted the importance of Chambers of Commerce work for members and was particularly complimentary about the efforts of Lochaber Chamber of Commerce during the crisis.
We’re one of very few Chambers to have grown our membership during the pandemic; a testament to the valuable support we’ve been able to give our members and local community, including being one of the first Chambers to develop a contact-tracing app for hospitality businesses.
Dr Cameron stressed the need for strong alliances and collaboration between businesses and was keen to hear directly from the members at the meeting about how their businesses have been affected by the current crisis. This feedback from members directly informs the actions of the SCC.
She also stressed the need for businesses to fill in the SCC Quarterly Economic Indicator Survey, which gives a snapshot of business sentiment every quarter and is a vital tool in representing the needs of business.
