Safety first as Mallaig road works start

-

A zebra crossing on Harbour Road in Mallaig is to be upgraded to a new signalised puffin crossing, with work starting later this month.

The five-week project to improve road safety in the area also includes improvements to the adjacent pavement, carriageway resurfacing and new road markings.

The project is scheduled to start on Monday April 26, with the majority of the work taking place between 7am and 7pm on weekdays only.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place throughout the project for safety.

Due to the nature of the work, some sections of the pavement will remain closed at times, however a temporary crossing and diversion route will be in place as required.

Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times.

The resurfacing phase of the project will take place overnight for three nights from Tuesday May 18 for three nights, from 7pm to 7am, with teams using a 10mph convoy system to safely escort traffic through the site while the new road surface is laid.

The convoy system will be removed during the day.

Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Representative, said: ‘Our team will do everything they can to keep disruption to a minimum and complete the project quickly and safely.’

Strict physical distancing protocols, in line with Scottish Government Covid-19 guidance, will be in place to protect site personnel and the public for the duration of the project.
