Travel green light signals relief to islands

-

The Scottish Government’s announcement on the national lifting of travel restrictions has been widely welcomed in the Outer Hebrides.

The move will allow leisure travel between the mainland and the islands to resume, a key step in life returning to normal and just as important for people who want to reconnect with friends and family on the mainland as it is for the tourism industry.

Leisure stays on the islands will be allowed from April 26, aligning with those set for the mainland, meaning businesses can plan for the season ahead while the tourism industry is committed to playing its part in making sure that everyone remains safe.

Rob McKinnon, chief executive of Outer Hebrides Tourism, said: ‘In our discussions with the government, we stressed the need for clarity and the importance of treating island and mainland businesses equally.

‘The announcement is welcome news on both fronts. It will come as a relief to businesses across the islands that have endured a tough 12 months and, more recently, been facing a wave of cancellations.’

Following the first minister’s announcement, Outer Hebrides Tourism has reminded visitors how important it is to treat the islands and the fragile environment with respect.

‘We hope the progress made in tackling Covid-19 continues and recognises the hard work of health workers and others throughout the pandemic,’ added Mr McKinnon.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar also welcomed the news that the islands, like the rest of Scotland, will remain in Covid level three.

Comhairle leader, Councillor Roddie Mackay, said: ‘We are pleased the confusion of the last few weeks has been cleared up and the tourism sector now has some clarity and can plan ahead with confidence.

‘We will continue to hold discussions with the Scottish Government and public health officials in the hope of a further easing of restrictions, particularly within our islands, as soon as possible. On the available data, we should certainly be expecting this to happen soon.’

Also from April 26, pubs, cafes and restaurants will re-open outdoors for groups of up to six people from up to six households with alcohol in line with local licencing laws, and indoors for groups of up to six people from up to two households without alcohol until 10pm.
