Ruthless elimination – Lorn Healthy Options weekly health tip
In our busy lives it’s easy to accumulate a long list of priorities which can overwhelm us if we are not careful.
This is often seen in large modern-day organisations which quote their priority number one, two and three and so on.
Humans are not great at concentrating on too many things at once and this can lead to a condition known as decision fatigue. This creates a real problem when trying to alter our long-term health trajectory via changes to habits which affect our health and well-being.
For example, many will find taking up a new activity and giving up smoking too much to focus on at once and would be better focussing on one element at a time. Once a new habit has time to embed and develop, other improvements will often come along as a consequence of this new-found identity and daily choices.
As the day progresses, we are less likely to make positive choices as a result of decision fatigue so this could and perhaps should make you think about when is the best time to adopt a new habit and provide the best chance of long-term success. Perhaps a good idea would be to write down a list of your health and well-being priorities, then focus on those which will help to really change the sort of person you are and put all those that could clutter your mind on a back burner or better still .... ruthlessly eliminate them from your thought process.
