Inverness success for young Lochaber athletes

-

Young athletes from Lochaber travelled to the all-weather running track at Queen’s Park, Inverness, for their first competition this year.

An open graded event, the athletes were grouped with other competitors of similar age and performance level.

The youngest Lochaber athlete taking part was Aaron Tresidder who won the 800 metres in the under-11 age group, finishing well clear of the field in a time of two minutes 49 seconds.

Maddison MacMillan, in the under-13 age group, was second in her 200-metre heat and second place overall in the long jump, leaping three metres 83cm. Her first track and field appearance on a fast track was very different from mid-winter cross-country races in the north district.

Angus Davies took part in three events – hurdles, the 200 metres and the long jump where he jumped three metres 92 cms.

Lochaber Athletics Club junior convenor Jim Treasurer said: ‘This memorable and successful appearance by the Lochaber athletes will be good experience for them in future races and jumping and throwing events.’

Lochaber Athletic Club is aiming to establish a junior track and field team to represent the area in the Grampian Athletics League next summer for the first time since 2008 and a cross-country team for the inter-club league this winter. New recruits and support from parents and the community are welcome. A linked Mallaig junior athletic section also trains in the west.
