Changes need to be made to ensure residents’ safety
This week’s front page story about the youngster who was knocked down while playing near his home in the new Dunbeg housing development highlighted what parents were already worrying about – the design of the estate’s network of pedestrian areas and roads needs to be looked at urgently.
It is with huge relief 11-year-old Cully was not badly injured, or worse, and one can only imagine how the poor driver is still feeling after the accident.
As our photograph shows, and residents have pointed out, while the design might look good, in terms of public safety, there needs to be more signs and speed restrictions in the area to make drivers aware of the need for restricted speed, particularly those who are visiting the development.
And while it may seem like an inconvenience to residents not to be able to park their cars right outside their front door, surely a short walk from a parking space is a small price to pay for the safety of children and other pedestrians?
