Highland fundraiser for Oban Rotary Club
Four members of the Rotary Club of Oban have undertaken a sponsored hill climb of the famous Dalmally Horseshoe.
Jack Tollan, Ciorsti Baxter, Alan Hoar and Graham Innes completed the trek which is part of the Cruachan group of hills near Oban.
The route passes over Stob Daimh – one of the two Munros on Cruachan – and also two Munro tops Sron an Isean and Stob Garbh, with all three peaks over 3,000ft.
The day started in warm summery weather with some light cloud and good progress was made up the steep south-east ridge of Sron an Isean.
On reaching the first summit some hill mist closed in which slightly spoiled the views but the group successfully managed to reach the summits of all three peaks.
Below the mist the views improved dramatically on the descent down the east ridge of Stob Garbh and the intrepid climbers made it safely back to the start having spent just over seven hours on the walk.
Roger Parry, a regular participants in the climbs, was unable to join the other Rotarians on the day. However, he and other members of his family completed the same climb a few days earlier to help swell the sponsorship total. The club issued a ‘well done’ to the Parry family.
More than £800 has been raised for Water Aid, a charity which has benefitted from the club’s sponsored climbs over the years.
This was the 23rd time Rotarians from the club in Oban have undertaken an annual sponsored hill climb. In total, they have climbed more than 36 Munros and Corbetts, with Graham Innes being ever present. As a result thousands of pounds have been raised for various charities and good causes including Water Aid.
