Caol garage boss calls time after almost 40 years
A long career in the motor trade is coming to an end as Kevin MacFadyen of KMF Mechanical Services in Caol lays down his spanners for the final time this week.
Born and brought up in Caol, Kevin, 54, started out as an apprentice panel beater 38 years ago, then set up his own business in the village 21 years ago, building a large and loyal customer base in that time.
But he now feels that after such a long period and with ever-changing new technology on the way, it is time to take stock, have more time for himself and his family, while also exploring other things to do.
Kevin told the Lochaber Times: ‘I have had a great time working in the motor trade and developed the business into selling cars and car rental as well as repair and maintenance.
‘I would like to thank all of my customers for their support, many of whom have been with me since day one.
I have enjoyed looking after them. However, I do feel it is time for me to wind down and stop doing 60-hour weeks, although I do have plans to keep me occupied.’
All of the staff are staying on under new boss Alan Beagrie, who has worked at KMF since leaving school.
Kevin added: ‘I am happy to pass the business over to Alan who will continue it under his own name.
‘He originally came on a week’s work experience from the high school at age 14 and enjoyed it so much he kept coming in after school until he was old enough to get a job.
‘I can’t think of anyone better to take over from me.
‘All of the staff have been brilliant over the years, too, and I was so worried about telling them, but am really glad they are all staying on.’
