1st XV
Sitting fourth in the league, Oban hosted Paisley at Glencruitten last weekend and with just three points between them, and with a game in hand for Oban, it was a big game for the boys in green.
Paisley started off well with some good individual runs from the backs and the forwards. Oban knew this wasn’t going to be an easy game and that was confirmed in the early stages when the visitors found a gap in the Oban defence to claim the first points of the day. Oban fought back and pressurised Paisley’s pack and for the third week in a row dominated the scrums which give their backs great opportunities for running the ball. The game changed quickly and Oban’s defence and attacking became too much for Paisley.
The final result was 28-15 to Oban, with home tries coming from Connor Ferris, Daniel Broderick and a brace from man-of-the-match Jethro Anderson.
Under 16s
Oban Under 16s travelled to take on Loch Lomond and a quick start led to Thomas Jackson breaking through the middle to score the opening try.
Loch Lomond started to come into the game and scored two tries before Oban broke through the centre with Thomas Jackson again providing the finishing touch to take his tally to 10 so far this season.
The hosts had significantly improved from the first meeting of the season and dominated Oban at the rucks. Drawing the team in before playing expansive rugby, the tries built up with the game finishing 65-12 in favour of Loch Lomond.
This was Oban Under 16s first defeat of the season and they will look to bounce back this Sunday at home to East Kilbride.
Under 14s
Having travelled to Kilmacolm to play Birkmyre, the game started 13-a-side at the request of the host team.
The reduced numbers helped the fast rucking expansive game played by Birkmyre, opening up space for their fast outside backs, who ran in a hat-trick of tries.
The second and third 20-minute periods were played at 15-a-side which enabled Oban to close down the Birkmyre attacks more efficiently.
During these periods, Oban’s rucking and tackling improved. But so did Birkmyre’s score with the hosts scoring four to Oban’s one try, scored by man-of-the-match, the hard tackling Hamish Macintyre, who also converted the try.
Excellent performances were also put in by Josh Olds, Donald MacCormack and Ruari Cottier. Final score Birkmyre Under 14s 39, Oban Under 14s 7. There are plenty of positives to work on at training for the next game on Sunday at home to Ardrossan.
