This time there was no holding back the former teacher and Rotarian as his general health and mobility improved quickly through guided cardiovascular and resistance exercise.

Walter is now a different person and feels he has recovered much of his independence. He is more active at home and his posture has improved dramatically which has reduced his falls risk.

A key area to strengthen for those with poor posture is the muscles of the lower back which pull the body upright and Walter and his brother highlighted the fact that although Atlantis has a fantastic array of gym kit, it was missing a user friendly option to specifically target these muscles.

Walter and his brother kindly offered to buy a lower back machine for Atlantis Leisure in the knowledge that he and many other Healthy Options clients could benefit from its use. The equipment cost more than £2,000 and Walter and his family were kindly assisted through a £500 donation from

the local Rotary Club. The new machine is now in situ at Atlantis Leisure and Walter has had his first training session on it. Senior exercise specialist Rob Graham told The Oban Times: ‘Walter’s story is a prime example of how Healthy Options can improve someone’s physical condition and mental wellbeing and act as an early warning system when we see a worrying deterioration in our client’s health.

‘Walter deserves huge credit for his determination to improve his health.’

The new equipment will sit well among a new range of gym kit which Atlantis will be installing this month.
