Highland class doors won’t get the chop

-

Classroom doors in the Highland Council area will be safe from the saw according to the local authority, writes Fiona Scott.

The statement came after Scotland’s education secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville suggested that chopping the bottom off classroom doors would tackle poor ventilation posing a Covid threat in schools.

‘Schools where there are persistently high C02 levels in certain rooms will be able to buy air filters, extractor fans and have the bottom chopped off classroom doors to improve air flow in an effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus,’ Ms Somerville said.

Her proposal, which was aimed at tackling ventilation problems in an estimated 2,000 classrooms at a cost of £4.3 million was ridiculed at Holyrood last week.

There are 29 high schools and 203 primary schools in the Highland Council area. None of which will require any carpentry according to the local authority.

‘The Highland Council has no plans to cut a section from the bottom of classroom doors in schools,’ it confirmed.
