Couple build tiny home for living near Oban

- By Sandy Neil

A young Bath couple, hoping to live around Oban through all four seasons, are building a mini ‘iron bungalow’ on wheels to make their dream a reality – but they need your help to find a plot to place it.

‘It’s our dream to live near Oban for a year to experience the islands and the West Coast of Scotland,’ appealed Sheri Dykes and Bill Ashley, both keen campers and lovers of the outdoors, on social media.

‘We’re looking for a plot on which to live in our tiny home. We are open minded to any location, position and arrangement.

‘We’re expecting to pay but would be equally happy to work in lieu of rent. Bill has grown up working on farms and has experience in woodwork, metalwork and mechanics so could be handy to have around. I’m a freelance graphic designer but open to getting away from my desk for more hands-on work.’

‘We love the West Coast,’ Bill, 30, explained to The Oban Times. ‘We have been up here camping. We are desperate to see it in all four seasons. Bath is nice but when we go back there, it feels dead because of the wildlife.

‘I love the idea of living in something very small, not having a huge footprint. We have built something nice for next to no money.’ The shell of their home cost £400, and the interior is made from second-hand materials. The trailer measures just 6.2 x 2.5 metres, but will be kept snug by an LPG boiler and solar power - ‘however being able to run an extension lead to it would be fantastic,’ Sheri, also 30, said.

‘Our happiest times are when we are camping. It is so simple. We have happily lived in an estate car for two weeks, and that was the happiest time

Bill and Sheri, both 30, hope to move up in March. The couple are building a mini ‘iron bungalow’ on wheels, to make their dream of living for a year on the West Coast a reality.

ever. That was in Scotland in the rain. Even two weeks is scratching the surface. The only way to see it is to live up here. All the people we have met have been so welcoming.’
