Avian flu found on Islay

-

A case of avian flu has been confirmed in a wild barnacle goose on Islay, writes Sandy Neil. Argyll and Bute Council is reminding people who keep poultry and other captive birds to protect them against the virus, after an outbreak of Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in Greenland barnacle geese in Ireland. ‘Given the migratory routes for wild birds over Argyll, and particularly the islands, it’s vital everyone who keeps birds complies with the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone measures to prevent the spread of the virus,’ said councillor David Kinniburgh, policy lead for planning and regulatory services. Bird and poultry owners must: ensure their birds are kept in birdproof enclosures, separate from wild birds; limit non-essential access to their poultry premises; ensure all feed and bedding is stored under cover; and change into dedicated, clean and disinfected footwear before entering poultry housing and runs.

Where risk of contamination is likely – from droppings, for example – dedicated clothing is advised. People who own 50 or more birds are required by law to register their flocks, while those with less than 50 are advised to register them on the National Poultry Register.

People are urged not to touch any dead birds they come across and report them to Defra by calling 03459 33 55 77.
