The Oban Times

WHO IS THIS?

- KAY MCDONALD editor@obantimes.co.uk

Oban has got lots going for it, which I think everyone would agree with.

We’ve got the beautiful setting, lovely buildings, thriving businesses but most of all the amazing people.

We’re bursting at the seams with groups and individuals who use their time and talents to help others in big and wee ways.

One such group who I have very real reason to be grateful to are the wonderful folk at the North Argyll Carers Centre on Albany Street. Unless you have reason to need them then you might not even know that they’re there.

I was one of the many people in our area who looked after a family member with major health problems at home, which while a privilege is also not an easy job. It can leave you feeling isolated, overwhelmed with responsibility and exhausted.

That’s where the Carers Centre steps in with people to talk to, advice, therapies to help with stress and a host of other ways that make it easier to carry on being a carer.

As well as being very welcoming to visitors, Oban is also a place that looks after its own, the people who live here, no matter where you come from, and my photographs lately have all been of people who help to make things happen.

Last week’s photograph was of Alfie MacKenzie who came to see me about a charity quiz for ABCD (Argyll Beats Cardiovascular Disease) – definitely a well-kent face in Oban. This week’s photograph is another very familiar face who spends much of her time helping at Mary’s Meals and always has a kind word and smile for everyone.
