Low scoring win puts Lochaber in line for fourth-place finish

-

Lochaber travelled to Cowal on Saturday for their last away game of the season and their fourth straight away game.

Having struggled to field a team in the first two fixtures since the turn of the year, Lochaber sent a strong squad to Lanark on Saturday February 19 and that looked set to continue with 20 players available on Monday March 7. However, come Friday evening that number dwindled to 15.

Cowal have had a few good results this season and Lochaber knew they would be in for a tough game, especially given the horrific weather conditions.

The first half was very much a tale of two good defences with a stuffy Cowal team proving difficult to break down.

The breakthrough eventually came when Jack Hamilton offloaded to Dean Hutchinson who passed the ball to captain Callum MacDonald around the half way line. MacDonald broke through the first tackle before throwing a dummy to beat the second and a strong fend saw off the last defender to give Lochaber a try and a 0-5 lead. The game remained tight into the second half but was brought to an early finish after a Cowal player suffered a bad head knock and had to wait for medical treatment. Lochaber wish the player all the best and hope he makes a speedy recovery. The result stood at 0-5. The win gives Lochaber a nine point lead over Birkmyre who have a game in hand.

Lochaber have to get a result in their final game at home to Loch Lomond on Saturday March 26 - kick off 3pm at Bananvie - to guarantee fourth spot and give them their best league finish since joining the West League.
