RUGBY ROUND-UP

-

Uddingston 14 Oban Lorne 19

It was an early start for the boys in green who travelled to Uddingston for a 12.30pm kick-off last Saturday.

Both teams started well, with good tackling and big runs.

The hosts got the first points on the board in the 35th minute. A rolling maul was brought down illegally by Oban, resulting in a yellow card and a penalty try against.

Having received two yellow cards in the opening half, Oban were on the receiving end of some straight talking by head coach Corrie Louw at the break. Discipline needed to be better in the second half.

Fifteen minutes after the re-start, Oban's attacking game began to show and three tries in quick succession, two converted, turned the game on its head.

But this was not the end of Uddingston. With Oban's defence sleeping, the hosts slipped in with a cracker of a try down the right hand side.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, Uddingston fought hard to get through the defence but some hard defensive tackling allowed Oban to hold on for a narrow victory.

Oban Ladies

Oban Ladies hosted a training session for Virginia University USA who were on a two-night visit to the town as part of a tour of Ireland and Scotland.

They were given a warm welcome at the clubhouse with president Darrell Williams outlining the history of the club. Murray Hamilton took the session with both the Oban ladies and the men's team helping out.

The Virginia squad was overwhelmed with the turnout which ended up at around 45 players.

Hard rain and thunder and lightning did not stop a good training session and the Virginia coaching staff

thanked Murray saying they had gained a lot of new ideas to take back to the States.

Greenock Under 13s 15 Oban U13s 17

An on-form Greenock side started strong with an early converted try.

Oban responded with strong surging runs by Ben Docherty and Josh Olds resulting in a score by Josh Olds. More hard attacking play saw Josh scoring another try, with Sean Thompson converting.

Strong attacking, rucking and tackling from both sides eventually led to another two tries by Greenock to give them a 11-7 lead going into half time.

Greenock scored early after the re-start, running in a try from their own five-yard line.

More surging runs by Ben Docherty and Harrison Felgate at centre, along with ferocious tackling by Finlay Cottier, Aiden Lawrie and Alfie Byers, eventually saw tries by Alfie Byers and Ben Docherty, with a conversion by Aiden Lawrie. There were great performances by all Oban players, with Harrison Felgate man of the match.

Greenock Under 14s 41 Oban Under 14s 7

After a long journey, Oban made a slow start and soon found themselves 14 points down against a fast and powerful Greenock.

Oban regrouped and led by man of the match Donald MacCormick they started making their tackles and getting over the gain line. Unfortunately dropped passes and poor kicking led to two further Greenock tries taking the score to 22-0.

Oban then had their best spell of the game with Donald MacCormick and Hamish Macintyre scoring a try either side of half time, one of which was converted by Hamish Macintyre.

Oban continued to press but poor rucking and kicking allowed the strong running Greenock backs time and space to score five more unanswered tries.

This was a massive improvement on the last match v Greenock but there will be plenty to work on at training to prepare for the next match v Lochaber at home this Sunday, March 20.

GHA Under 16s 50 Oban U16s 0

The Under 16s travelled to GHA for a cup tie missing captain Finlay Brown, vice captain Thomas Jackson and his centre partner Murray MacDonald.

A well-structured GHA played fast rugby and were immense all over the pitch. Oban Lorne played the second half with their heads up and chests out in their first outing in almost seven weeks. The boys did the club and themselves proud as they took on the tournament favourites. The boys now drop down a competition into the shield semi-final where they face East Kilbride at home on Sunday March 20.

Wet weather led to a number of call-offs but there was still plenty action in the games that did go ahead on Saturday March 12.
