Schools support Ukraine

-

Schools across the Highlands have been showing their support for Ukraine by raising money to help its refugees.

Some schools are planning a ‘dress down day’ when, instead of uniform, pupils will be encouraged to attend classes wearing blue and yellow - the colours of the Ukrainian flag - for a suggested £1 donation.

The Highland Council education committee chairman councillor John Finlayson said: ‘We are proud of our young people who are organising and participating in activities to support Ukrainian refugees. I would encourage people to keep an eye out for what their local school has organised and to please donate.’

Kilmuir Primary School pupils in Portree showed their support by making blue and yellow paper hearts. Schools will be donating to the national charity of their choice including The British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal, UNICEF, The UN Refugee Agency and Save the Children’s Ukrainian Crisis Relief Fund. Due to economic waste and export rules, most charities are sending money directly to partner organisations as they feel that to be more effective and efficient use of resources. However, if individuals wish to donate goods, some schools are also accepting donations. Information on donations is available on school websites and social media platforms.
