Bowl up, bowl up - new season about to start

-

Oban Bowling Club members are polishing up their lignoids in preparation for the start of a new season.

The Dalriach Road Green will open on Saturday April 2 when play will begin at 2pm with the traditional President v Vice President Match.

An afternoon tea from Bossards will be served after the game. The club will subsidise the tea, with anyone wishing to attend being asked to contribute £3 towards the cost. A notice will be displayed in the clubhouse beforehand asking for names so the club catering corps know how many people will be attending.

If the game does not go ahead due to bad weather, the afternoon tea will still be served and members are asked to go along to the clubhouse for 4.30pm.

Treasurer Janice Fraser will be at the clubhouse on Saturday March 26 from 2pm to 4pm if people wish to collect membership forms, pay their fees and sign up for opening day. To enter club knock-out competitions, fees or first instalments must be paid by 7pm on opening day. The closing date for competition entries is 7pm on Saturday April 9.

Despite Covid restrictions having ended on Monday March 21, the committee is still asking anyone attending the club to continue to use hand sanitiser on a regular basis and to give people space. Although face coverings are no longer mandatory indoors, the committee also fully supports members who wish to continue to wear one.

The committee has also decided to buy a defibrillator to be sited on the outside of the clubhouse. This life-saving machine will be available to the community and will be on the national register. Funds raised from the opening day spider will be the first official fundraising effort. The defibrillator will be supplied by St John’s Ambulance which will provide training on its use.

Oban Bowling Club secretary Anne Stewart said: ‘May I, on behalf of president Iain Boyd and your committee, wish you a happy and successful 2022 bowling season. I look forward to seeing you on opening day.’

The club thanks Aidan McCuish and Robert Dairon for their donation which was used to buy six more bowls gatherers.
