New indoor league kicks off in the Nevis Centre
A new force in the world of football has launched with the first matches of FIFW (Football in Fort William) taking place in the Nevis Centre last weekend.
Picking up from the now defunct but popular Winter Indoor League, well-known local footballer Scott Hunter masterminded the new organisation bringing together players keen to take part in a weekly six-a-side event.
Thirteen teams, with the usual round of colourful names, are taking part with the first game featuring SLT Galacticos and The Christmas Crackers kicking off last Sunday in half hour slots under the watchful and firm eye of referee Mikey MacKinnon.
Scott said: ‘With Covid and the Nevis Centre being out of action, it has taken a while to
get things going but there was always great enthusiasm for it.
‘Thanks to everyone taking part to make it happen. The response has been great and everyone really enjoyed this first round.
‘There is such a demand for this type of football that hopefully we can build on this and take it to an outdoor league during the summer, but we’ll
just have to wait and see how that goes.’
The league will be held every Sunday in the Nevis Centre from 4.30pm.
The trophies and winners’ awards have already been jointly sponsored by Abrightside Photography and The Write Image/alba.photos but there is an opportunity for sponsorship of the weekly
competitions. For more details, contact Scott through the Football In Fort William Facebook page.
