The Oban Times

WHO IS THIS?

- KAY MCDONALD editor@obantimes.co.uk

A big thank you to everyone involved in the Keep Oban Beautiful Spring Clean this year.

You’ve done a wonderful job and made a huge difference to how the town looks as we head towards summer. Hope Kitchen is also an inspiration with its weekly beach cleans and tackling of hotspots. But it’s not something we should be watching others do and thanking them for, it’s something we should all be involved in.

It’s been said before, but it won’t hurt to repeat it, if all of us looked around when we stepped out of our houses and picked up the first few pieces of litter we saw it would make a difference. And if we did that every day, it would make a huge difference.

If you fancy doing a bit more, as well as improving our environment, litter picking is a hugely satisfying thing to do. It’s mindful while you do it as you are concentrating on one thing and everything else goes out of your head. And the sense of achievement when you’ve finished even one wee area is fantastic.

I can recommend it as a way to improve your mood and to be sociable as everyone talks to you when they see what you’re doing and expresses their appreciation. It really is a win-win situation, good for you and good for the environment. It also encourages other people to join you or tackle an area of their own choosing and there are plenty areas that still need some tender loving care.

The photograph last week was of one of our friendly butchers, Alister Jackson, and this week it’s another of Oban’s town ambassadors.
