Kilmartin Castle is a hot property - and that’s official, writes Kathie Griffiths.

The luxury B&B has just won the ‘hottest property’ crown in the 2022 Eviivo Awards, dubbed the Oscars of independent accommodation.

The awards - just returned after a two-year break for Covid - recognise the best B&Bs, guest houses, boutique hotels, pubs, and restaurants with rooms in the UK.

Stef Burgon and Simo Hunt, who own and run the 16th century castle, said they were up against some real stunners also shortlisted including The Harrison Chambers of Distinction in Belfast, a Bohemian-style boutique bolthole made up of restored, landmark Victorian merchants’ residences dating from 1879.

The delighted couple are now planning to celebrate their win by visiting some of their cool fellow nominees. Stef said: ‘We are really appreciative of the recognition from Eviivo and we are continually working on creating special experiences in Kilmartin Castle and lasting Scottish memories for our fabulous guests.’

Stef and Simo travelled around Scotland in 2014 and could not find a castle to stay in that still felt like a castle once they got inside.

When they found Kilmartin Castle the following year, they left their jobs and by July 2019 they had finished restoring it and were ready to opens its doors to welcome in guests.

All of the bedrooms at Kilmartin Castle have walk-in rain showers, some have handcrafted copper baths and others their own wood-burning stove and there’s even a wild swimming pond and an outside pizza oven.
