Hamish Napier: Making his elemental music on Mull

- By Kathie Griffiths kgriffiths@obantimes.co.uk

Scottish folk musician Hamish Napier has invited a band of young music makers to join his gig on Mull this weekend.

Youngsters from Mull Music Makers will be the multi-instrumentalist and composer's unofficial warm-up act when he goes on stage at Dervaig Village Hall on Saturday.

Hamish, who has family in Dervaig, will also be joined on the night by acclaimed fiddle player Patsy Reid as part of his much-anticipated tour The Woods.

The Woods won Hamish the title Album of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards 2020.

This year's tour is third time lucky for Hamish after Covid cancelled plans for 2020 and 2021.

His gigs at Comrie, Strathblane and Glencoe all sold out. Tickets are still available for Dervaig Village Hall at 7.15pm.

Laura Mandleberg, who co-ordinates Mull Music Makers, a community project bringing tutors to the island to help children learn music, said excitement is building among its own talented musicians.

'We are super-excited! It's been two long years since we've been able to perform for real on stage in public so this is an incredible opportunity for us.

'It's an absolute privilege for us to play on the same stage on the same night as some of Scotland's most wellknown folk musicians right here on Mull. Thank you Hamish.'

It also will be a chance for Patsy Reid to reunite with some of the young people she worked with at last year's highly successful Mull Fiddle Festival where young people aged five to 26 were immersed in traditional music making by experts. 'We did a bit of impromptu busking at our popular fiddle festival last year but Saturday will be very special indeed. Our youngest member on stage that night could be just five!' added Laura.

Tickets can be bought via www. eventbrite.com/e/hamish-napierpatsy-reid-the-woods-folk-concertwith-mull-music-makers-tickets-305420640357.

Inspired by the flora and fauna of Scotland’s native forests, The Woods album is being sponsored by the biggest habitat restoration project in the UK – Cairngorms Connect.

Hamish is currently on an epic 10year journey to create five albums, a pentalogy, of completely original folk music composed in praise of the Scottish Highlands.

Each of the albums will represent one of the five elements of water, fire, earth, wind and ether.
