-

As part of its 50th birthday celebrations, Oban’s lifeboat station hosted a special exhibition in the town over the weekend, writes Susan Windram.

The life and times of Oban RNLI, spanning five decades, was on show at The Rockfield Centre over three days, starting on Friday April 15.

Manned by the station’s volunteers, photographs and information boards remembering some of the lifeboat station’s history in photographs were on display, documenting lots of stories and the lifeboat’s most memorable call-outs.

Fundraisers were also be there with a pop-up shop, including a limited edition mug to commemorate the station’s anniversary.

The free event included model lifeboats and children’s activities.

Oban RNLI volunteer Phil Hammerton said: ‘It was great to see so many supporters and visitors at our 50th anniversary weekend exhibition.

‘The story of Oban lifeboat is woven into the story of the town and we look forward to celebrating the 50 years that Oban lifeboat has been saving lives – and helping births – throughout 2022.

‘The event was a great success all round and we look forward to seeing our supporters and visitors at our next 50th anniversary event when we launch the annual RNLI Mayday campaign on May 2.

‘I would also like to say a big “thank you” to The Rockfield Centre for hosting the event and to the volunteers and staff who put the event together. Without everybody’s support the RNLI cannot go on saving lives at sea!’

The station plans to celebrate its important anniversary with other events, including a station open day and more fundraisers.
