Roddy flies the flag for Oban at New York’s Tartan Day
Oban got a bite of Big Apple excitement when the city’s Tartan Day celebrations took to the streets.
Deputy Provost of Argyll and Bute Council Roddy McCuish was in New York with an Oban banner to join the parade on Saturday April 9.
Roddy was joined on the march by his wife Marian, son Michael who lives in New York and, by chance, a group of holidaymakers from Oban who spotted the banner and could not resist tagging along.
‘The excitement was palpable as we walked down 6th Avenue in New York, proudly representing the town and local region.
‘Amongst a swirl of pipes, flags and tartan-attired Scottish terriers, we were met with cheers and enthusiasm from Americans and tourists who were lining the streets,’ said Michael McCuish, a director of a public relations company in the city.
‘Oban families united, we marched to the sound of pipe bands with New Yorkers clapping.
‘We were all humbled to hear the wonderful reaction our local town received - with a plethora of parade attendees yelling they had visited or looked forward to visiting again in the future.
‘Roddy thanks BID4Oban, which kindly provided a banner, helping to make sure Oban was represented at such a wonderful celebration of Scottish culture in one of the most exciting cities in the world,’ added Michael.
