Harbour work starts
Work to improve the ferry terminal at Lochmaddy Harbour, North Uist, which forms a key part of the Skye Triangle improvement project, has started.
Contractor George Leslie Limited will carry out the work which was presented to the community at public consultation and com
munity engagement events and will include an expanded marshalling area, pier extension and strengthening, new fendering and dredging.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has been working closely with Transport Scotland, Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), CalMac Ferries Ltd and Highland Council to deliver the Lochmaddy work alongside work at Tarbert and Uig.
A comhairle spokesperson said: ‘It was extremely unfortunate that the original contract with L and M Keating Ltd had to be terminated, which delayed the delivery process, but we look forward to now working with George Leslie Limited in this important element of the Skye Triangle Infrastructure Improvement Programme.
‘We do not envisage there being any disruption to the ferry service as a result of the work at Lochmaddy and any disruption at the pier will be kept to a minimum.’
David Ross, managing director of George Leslie, said: ‘These critical works will be undertaken whilst maintaining the ferry service, ensuring any adverse impact to island communities during construction is minimised.
‘The project will provide a boost to the local economy through employment opportunities, plant and material supply, additional services and educational support.
‘We will be liaising with the council, schools and interested parties to develop a community benefits plan to maximise the positive impact this investment provides.’
Construction work is expected to be complete in spring 2023.
