LAC Juniors get back on track

-

Lochaber Athletics Club (LAC) Juniors are getting back on track with their own track and field team this summer.

It is 12 years since the club entered a multi-age group team in the Grampian Athletics League which boasts more than 20 athletic clubs from the Highlands and Islands, Perth, Dundee and Tayside.

The league is split into two sections with the North competing at Queens Park in Inverness and the East with competitions in Aberdeen. The top four teams from each section and age group progress to a final in Inverness in September.

Teams enter athletes in age groups over nine years old and over a number of events. These include running, sprinting 100, 200 and 400 metres, hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot putt, discus and javelin. There are also relay races with four athletes in a team.

Teams get awarded points for a placing in each event and they tally up the points in each age - under 11, under 13, under 15, under 17 and senior.

The first track and field meeting is at Queens Park, Inverness, on Sunday May 8 with the next competitions on Sundays June 5 and July 3.

LAC Juniors coach Jim Treasurer said: ‘The young athletes are excited and looking forward to competing on the international standard all-weather track and jumping and throwing facilities.’

The club is always on the lookout for more junior athletes aged over nine and senior athletes to join the team. Junior and senior training takes place at Claggan Park on Thursdays from 6pm to 7pm. Full coaching is given in the technical jumping and throwing events.
