Dr Fiona Fawcett: Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party

-

Fiona worked as a family GP, specialising in elder care, and as a breast cancer specialist for more than 25 years. She is a powerful people’s advocate and fights for everyone who needs a helping hand.

After working during the foot and mouth epidemic she went on to study agriculture at SRUC and is passionate about the environment and improving biodiversity.

She has a small croft with her husband Richard, four dogs and a rescue horse called Jazz. She is passionate about standing up for the rights of those who have no voice and hates ‘Inverness centric’ politics. Fiona believes that 18 years to wait for a new local hospital is a Highland scandal. Rising outdoor tourism has increased demand on the hospital and an ageing population has put strain on community elder care. This coupled with increased travelling for specialist mental health services mean health and social care services must be urgently improved with more specialist care closer to home.

Community health champions have been fighting for years and she promises to join the fight and hold the Highland Council vigorously to account from within. Fiona believes we need even more affordable housing than has been planned for the Fort William area, with more affordable, quality houses to rent for young people, local workers, and their families. Road quality and safety must be a priority due to the increased tourist traffic, and the fees locals pay on the Corran Ferry must be reduced with priority for local traffic. Highland schools have the worst results in Scotland and we need to reduce the stranglehold of red tape and constant change on our teachers. Balanced sustainable tourism is a must, with the needs of locals firmly accounted for. Business needs a break, with the provision of enough fiscal stability and rates relief to help our high street.
