Crocheting Kirsty in missing persons appeal

-

Do you know the whereabouts of missing piper Angus and highland dancer pal Riona? writes Kathie Griffiths

The crocheted pair were last seen gracing the top of a post box in Argyll Square.

It seems the post box topper, specially created by Oban crafter Kirsty MacKenzie to celebrate the post-Covid return of the town’s Highlands and Islands Music and Dance Festival, was too good for some light-fingered passerby to resist.

But Kirsty, whose colourful toppers frequently brighten up the town, has vowed not to be put off by the cheeky theft.

‘In a way it’s a nice compliment that someone wanted it so much they took it home but it’s not meant for just one person to enjoy – it’s for everyone to get pleasure from!’ said Kirsty.

If the topper is returned, it will be kept safe until reappearing for next year’s festival.

Kirsty had poignantly named the piper after Angus MacLennan, who was a member of Oban Pipe Band and worked in the Post Office garage. He passed away two years ago. And she named the dancer after Riona, her 12-year-old daughter, who competed in the festival’s dancing competition at the weekend, getting a seventh and eighth place in her class.

‘I don’t usually repeat my designs so I won’t be making another one exactly the same but I will keep making more,’ added Kirsty.
