Golfers tee-off for cancer charity

-

Four friends are getting ready to tee-off on a charity challenge in memory of loved ones.

The pals will be taking on Macmillan Cancer’s Longest Day Golf Challenge on Thursday June 2, playing 72 holes of the game in 24 hours visiting four clubs.

They will start off at Seil Golf Club at 6am the day before, playing the courses at Dalmally and Taynuilt and finishing at Oban’s Glencruitten Golf Club.

Oban High School teacher Matt Smyth is being joined by roofer Cameron McCallum, joiner Neil Gillies and power station worker David Campbell on the sporting mission to raise as much money as possible.

Their online fundraising page can be found at https://longestdaygolf.macmillan.org.uk/ Team/teammcn.

The target is set at £1,000 and the golfers hope to raise as much as possible as a thank you to the cancer charity for all the support it gives.

All four of the challenge team have been affected by cancer. Matt’s mother-in-law Val Barnham passed away with cancer nine years ago, Neil’s mum Annie Gillies died earlier this year from oesophageal cancer, Cameron was just 16 when he lost his grannie Alice

McCallum to lung cancer and David’s mum Ruby Campbell died in 2020 from pancreatic cancer.

Matt said: ‘One in three of us will be touched by cancer at some point in our lives. All four of us have lost loved ones to the disease. That’s why we are taking on the challenge to say thank you to Macmillan Cancer for the work it does in giving support that means so much to people in time of need.’

Neil added: ‘I lost my mum to cancer just a couple of months ago, so I know from experience how much help and support she got from her Macmillan nurse and how much it meant, especially in her final days. I hope people will give as generously as they can.’
