Just desserts

Politics. Hmm. It is a subject I avoid usually for the simply prosaic reason that I am not politically active and do not tub-thump for a single party (perhaps a good thing for a journalist; but you must decide on that point).

So to the recent council elections. Despite my just mentioned neutrality, I was considerably disappointed by the reported apathy among voters – especially, apparently, the young – given the low turnout at the polls.

This matters, to me at least. Again, despite my disinterest, I am a determined advocate of the imperative that those of us entitled to elect our representatives – at all levels – should indeed do so.

There are still far too many nations where benighted populations have no say in who rules them, and our cherished right in having that privilege has been hard earned at the cost of many lives and much blood.

Ergo, I always vote when possible and am keenly aware of the sacrifices made by others to give me the opportunity. I only wish more people thought likewise

That said, I was heartened that Argyll and Bute’s youngest new cooncillor is Daniel Hampsey, at the tender age of just 18. It is good to know that some youngsters still recognise the importance of politics and their chance to influence our communities.

Also, I found myself rather pleased that Oban elected its first Green councillor, not because I support the party but because I champion diversity and welcome the broader spectrum of views that will be represented.

And on that point, I may be in a minority but I quite like the range of opinions elected to the cooncil, with Tories, Nationalists, Labour, Lib Dems, Independents and the aforesaid Green all taking seats.

Now, just remember that you represent all the people of all political beliefs.
