Multi disciplined athletes in Lochaber have been cheering on a new club which has been building momentum since October last year.

Founded by friends Bronagh Wishart and Alex Hill, the idea of Nevis Triathlon Club began when a group of friends and keen triathletes started meeting on Wednesday mornings for a casual swim at Lochaber Leisure Centre.

Alex explained: “We competed in races over the season last year but unfortunately we couldn’t compete under an affiliated triathlon club since there wasn’t one in the area.”

Bronagh and Alex, who are both qualified swimming and triathlon coaches, sparked the idea of setting up an affiliated club in the area to open up access and involvement in triathlon in Lochaber and then represent the club at races as a big group.

With a love of mountains and triathlon, Alex moved to Lochaber in 2021 and has raced in everything from local aquathons to age-group GB events.

It was his desire to give something back that led Alex into becoming a coach and he began doing so regularly at his previous triathlon club.

On moving to Lochaber, however, Alex found that he missed “getting people psyched on triathlon” and

“watching them improve and reach their goals”.

“It’s been amazing to have NTC start up and I’m looking forward to meeting more keen triathletes in the area,” he added.

Bronagh has also been involved in triathlon and teaching swimming for a long time, over 10 years, and moved to Fort William in 2022.

She is equally passionate about her sport and is enthusiastic about creating a supportive community for those keen to try and/or train for triathlons in the Lochaber area.

Over the months since October, the club, which caters for all abilities, has been growing and the weekly swimming sessions have been a great success.

“We really look forward to the summer for group road cycle rides, open water swimming and competing under Nevis Triathlon,” she said.

The club runs a weekly swim session at Lochaber Leisure Centre from 7.15pm - 8.15pm on Wednesday nights.
