Darts league pays tribute to Donald ‘Stag’ MacDonald

-

On Friday evening the Oban and District Darts League remembered Donald “Stag” MacDonald, who was one of the best darts players in the area. The players considered the option of postponing, but it was widely agreed that the last thing Donald would have wanted is for the darts to stop.

More than £200 was raised on the night from subs and scratch cards, with this going towards a memorial trophy in Donald’s memory.

There was a turnout of 28 players on the night, with Iain MacMillan making his debut as the standard of darts becoming increasingly impressive.

With the finals night looming large, a top eight placing in the league table is the aim for a spot in the main competition.

Despite being knocked out in the last 16, it looks like Adam Brook will clinch his second league title in two seasons, barring a miraculous comeback from one of the other players.

Meanwhile, there will likely be a three-horse race for second position between Leon Smith, Cameron Carmichael and Arran Manson.

Manson won it on the night, defeating Carmichael 4-1 in the final, the runner-up bounced back with a vengeance after missing last week’s fixture.

It was Manson’s second final since his return to darts this year and he always took bonus points by scoring an 105 checkout.

The other bonuses were awarded to Brooks for a record points haul from three 180s and 111 and 118 finishes, and Carmichael, who hit an 180.

Organiser of the ODD Ross Tough said: “The player of the week goes to Lewis McPhee. Lewis was playing excellently last night, defeating both his group opponents and his last 16 opponent, and losing 1-2 to Cammy in a tight game where he took the lead.”

He added: “We had news on the Kilmartin game this week and the away league has been decided as Friday March 31. Our top 10 placed players in the final league table will meet the qualification criteria.”
