Ravens fly east for Granite City competition
Two Oban Ravens squash players travelled to Aberdeen last weekend to play in the Scottish Squash National Masters Championships, writes Finn Nixon.
Nicola Morgan and Rebecca Christopher were competing alongside Women in Scotland Playing Squash (WISPS) from Friday March 3 to Sunday March 5. Female squash players from across Scotland were invited to play at the Aberdeen Squash & Racketball Club, with 25 women aged between 35 and 65 taking part.
The Ravens picked up from where they left off after their previous WISPS competition in Edinburgh on Sunday January 29.
The Masters used a knock-out format, dividing competitors into several age categories, with Rebecca competing in the Women’s Over 40 (+35) category.
She played three matches in Box 1, finishing with 25 game points and losing out in the 5/6 play-off.
Nicola was competing in the Women’s Over 45 (+50) category in Box 1, defeating Jennifer Broadley 4-1 (9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9) in one of her matches to finish third in her group.
The next event at this level for the Ravens is the WISPS Newlands in Glasgow on Sunday March 26 and Nicola says that travelling is something they do regularly.
“We got to play against people [in Aberdeen], who were at a range of levels, which is sometimes difficult to find unless you travel to other parts of Scotland”, she explains.
“Sometimes it feels like we’re a bit stuck up here in that sense, so it was a step up in that sense, but we were also playing players who were at our level. The last one in the series is in September and October, and we do travel around the country quite a lot to play.
“It was a thoroughly good experience and it is also good to see other women being encouraged to play squash.”
The Oban Ravens Squash Team were formed by Colin MacNiven in 2018 and train on Thursday evenings, as well as holding regular fundraising events.
