Runrig musical returns as band marks 50 years

-

A musical featuring the music of Runrig will tour Scotland this year, coinciding with 50 years since the band was formed on the Isle of Skye.

The Stamping Ground is an exciting Raw Material and Eden Court Highlands co-production, with the show first premiering in Inverness in July 2022.

It will visit Glasgow, Greenock, Inverness, Stirling, Edinburgh and Perth between Friday May 5 and June 24.

A musical story about love, life and the land, The Stamping Ground follows the story of Euan and Annie, who return to a rural Scottish community after seeking a fresh start with their teenage daughter. But there’s a heatwave in the Highlands and they find themselves lost in this once familiar place, which is now filled with more tourists than residents.

The community's pub is for sale and with rising tensions about the future of the place they call home, they are swept into a battle to save the heart of the community. But can they save each other?

Featuring new arrangements of Runrig hits, The Greatest Flame, All Things Must Change and The Stamping Ground, the musical shares the power and heart of the band’s most celebrated music. The show's songs have been written by Calum and Rory MacDonald, the brothers who formed Runrig on Skye in 1973.

The brothers said: “It is so good to see The Stamping Ground is not only returning to Eden Court but going on a nationwide tour. There has been such a positive reaction from fans and the public, with still so many that have not had the opportunity to see it the first time around.”

The production will be bolstered by new cast members Juliet Cadzow of Balamory and River City; Jenny Hulse, River City and Outlaw King; Ali Watt; Naomi Stirrat and Robin Campbell.

They will join Caitlin Forbes, Annie Grace, Robert Grose, Barrie Hunter and Brian James O’Sullivan, with musicians John Kielty, Jon Mackenzie and Stuart Semple joining the performers on stage to bring the songs to life.

The Stamping Ground has been written by award-winning playwright Morna Young and is based on a concept by Alan B McLeod.
