Entertaining finale to the Oban darts season
Oban Lifesaving Club swim raises more than £2,300
Oban Lifesaving Club’s annual sponsored swim, held on Tuesday March 7, raised £2,359 towards training new instructors.
Young people can join the club from the age of five and progress from the small pool for learners to rookie lifesaving.
Oban Lifesaving Club teacher Francesca Bichard said: “We are trying to fundraise to get more teachers because it is a popular club and we have around 110 members. We teach children and young people how to swim and develop lifesaving skills up to rookie lifeguard level. All the youngsters enjoy 30-minute session to learn to swim before progressing to the big pool.
“It teaches rookie lifeguards important life skills and when they get older they learn how to perform CPR.”

The Oban & District Darts (ODD) League season ended on Friday March 24 with wins for Ron MacLean and Fagan MacPhee.
In another exciting round of darts action, 25 players turned out at the Lochavulin Bar and were divided into a Top 8 Competition and the Consolation Competition.
A presentation for the top three players overall for the season kicked off proceedings, with Adam Brook, first; Cameron Carmichael, second; and Leon Smith, third, awarded Bespoke Timber Services trophies.
On the night, Ron MacLean won the Top 8 competition, defeating Arran Manson 5-1 in an exciting final.
Brook then beat Andrew Ritchie 2-1 in the third place play-off to claim bronze before two father vs son match-ups in the Consolation Competition.
Fagan McPhee beat Keegan McPhee 4-2 in the semi-finals, then defeated his other son, Lewis, in the final as Billy Thompson triumphed 2-1 against Keegan in the other third placed play-off.
ODD organiser Ross Tough said: “The players’ player of the week went to Rebecca McPhee for Friday’s performance and the last seven weeks when she has really come on and is playing nice darts.
“She hasn’t missed a week since January and has showed great commitment to ODD by filling the football scratch

Ms Bichard added: “The wee ones in the smaller pool were under instruction and it was a great incentive for them to complete distances and get badges for it.”
As part of the event, the Kayla MacDonald Trophy was awarded to Kyle Mackie for outstanding achievement during the last year. The cup was presented to Kyle by Kayla’s brothers, Ruardigh and Ronnie MacDonald.
Kayla died in an accident in a forest near Beinn Lora in 2017, aged eight. She had been a popular member of Oban Lifesavers.
The trophy was bequeathed by Kayla’s family to the club in 2018 and is presented to a member who has improved in swimming and has shown improvement in behaviour, attitude and life skills.
Ms Bichard added: “Thank you to everyone who took part in the swim, the teachers and helpers who gave their support and all the parents and families for raising such a fantastic amount of money.”
Oban Lifesavers meets on Tuesdays between 5pm and 8pm at a cost of £1.50 per session.

The Under 16s had no fixture.
