Hats off to Hamish and the joys of local news reporting

-

One of the great pleasures of working for local newspapers is being able to report on “ordinary” people doing extraordinary things.

This week, however, we have a heart-warming tale of an extraordinary little boy doing an ordinary thing. And it is absolutely joyous.

Over the past month, three-year-old Hamish Pollok has been walking a mile a day in and around Fort William with his mum Sarah and, if it is dry, big sister Millie. Nothing unusual in that you say? Read on.

Hamish was born prematurely and after becoming ill was diagnosed with periventricular leukomalacia - damage to the white matter in his brain - and, as a result, developed cerebral palsy.

Hamish walks with the aid of a frame but hasn’t let that hinder his efforts to raise money and awareness for Cerebral Palsy Scotland. Not only is he smashing the walking and the fundraising, he is lifting the spirits of everyone he meets along the way with his cheery smile and determined attitude.

To donate to Hamish’s fundraiser go to his Facebook fundraising page, Walk ‘n’ Roll challenge for Cerebral Palsy Scotland.
