No access to Kilt Rock

-

Highland Council is reminding the public that due to construction work Kilt Rock and the visitor car park remains closed until the end of May.

A temporary Clearway Notice is in place on the A855 Portree-Staffin-Uig Road (Kilt Rock) and parking is prohibited on the road or verge, with fines for those who do not comply.

Over the Easter bank holiday weekend 12 vehicles were issued Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) and fined £100 for breaching the temporary traffic notice.

Councillor John Finlayson, Skye and Raasay area committee chairperson, said: “We urge the public not to visit Kilt Rock while under construction. Public safety is a priority.

“Work on the new car park facilities is progressing well and once completed will offer great off-road parking for visitors to enjoy the Kilt Rock experience. It is disappointing road users are not taking individual responsibility for their behaviour; Police Scotland and the council parking enforcement officers will continue to take appropriate actions when the rules are not being followed.”

Councillor Calum Munro, Skye and Raasay area committee member, said: “Clear signs are in place to advise drivers/visitors that the car park is closed and a fence around the site has been erected. After a disruptive Easter weekend, where members of the public were ignoring the signage, parking restrictions, and scaling the security fencing to access Kilt Rock, we urge people to abide the rules for their own safety and that of other road users.

“Those local to the Skye and Raasay area could also assist in spreading the word that Kilt Rock is closed for major improvement works until late May.”

While Kilt Rock is closed for construction work, visitors can still visit the many attractions available across Skye and Raasay, such as The Old Man of Storr, which has recently undergone major development works, offering visitor car parking and public amenities.

Information on The Old Man of Storr can be found on its new dedicated website thestorr.com.

Highland Council would like to thank the public for their patience during the improvement programme and will issue an update on the opening of Kilt Rock in due course.
