Lochaber quintet in the swim in Aberdeen

-

Lochaber Leisure Centre Swim Team members joined elite athletes from all over the country at the Scottish National Age Group Championships (SNAGS) held in Aberdeen from Wednesday April 12 to Sunday April 16.

Five Lochaber swimmers qualified for what is the major competition of the year with all competitors having to produce difficult entry times to participate.

The Lochaber quintet joined other swimmers from the Highlands to swim as part of Highland Swim Team (HST).

Having just turned 14,

Calum Stewart returned after finishing first in the 50m front crawl and third in the 100m front crawl last year. This time, Calum finished second in both events, losing by less than 0.2 seconds in each. Calum’s great swims means he is the fourth fastest swimmer in the UK (50m) and seventh in the 100m.

Unsurprisingly, Calum also broke the club’s records for both events. He also set new club records for the 200m front crawl.

Elizabeth Morgan, 17, qualified for six events and participated in four relays for

HST. As well as finishing in the top 20 in three of her events, Elizabeth produced five new personal best times and broke the club record for the 100m back crawl which has stood for five years.

Competing in her first SNAGS event, Mya MacCallum, 14, produced two new best times and just missed a personal best in her third event. Mya was 12th in the 100m breaststroke - just missing the finals - and has improved dramatically in the last six months.

Sean Cann, 15, finished in the top 30 in the 50m front crawl with a new personal best. Sean also swam in three relays for the HST team. He is committed to his swimming, with results beginning to show.

Charleigh Adams, 15, was selected as lead-off leg swimmer in the HST 4 x 200m front crawl relay team.

Charleigh had a bad fall when she was running the week before and it was only her determination not to let the team down that enabled her to swim.

Five swimmers qualifying from one of the smallest clubs in Scotland is a major achievement and everyone is looking forward to more success next year.
