Fund success for charities partnership

- By Kathie Griffiths kgriffiths@obantimes.co.uk

A group of five charities have come together to explore how Oban’s community can connect better and be more ambitious.

Healthy Options, Hope Kitchen, ALIenergy, Oban Youth Café and Atlantis Leisure are all part of the new Connecting Communities Collective (CCC), sharing their skills and resources.

The partnership is celebrating winning three years of funding worth £335,000 from the Scottish Government’s Investing in Communities Fund.

There is no doubt that Oban has a great network of community-based organisations and the CCC wants to bring them even closer and improve on how they work together and support each other, as well as bring learning and ideas from wider Scotland and beyond, said Jane Churchill, a freelance third sector development consultant living in Oban who has been supporting the partner groups.

Achieving shared ambitions for our town and bringing power back to the people are key aims of the CCC, added Gill Bruce, from Lorn and Oban Healthy Options. “We are very excited to be part of this partnership and to have led the funding application which has brought £335,000 directly into the area - some of this fund is specifically to enable us to buy in services and activities from agencies such as the cinema or bike shop, with a view to opening up opportunities for connection and supporting local business,” she told The Oban Times.

To help support the CCC in developing its partnership, a three-year funded position has opened up for a Connecting Communities development officer.

The partnership is looking for someone who is passionate about communities and about looking at how we can do things better, a great communicator, able to set up and manage systems and procedures, and full of initiative.

Jane said: “This group of community-led organisations are wonderful to work with and really deserve to be supported by funds such as the Scottish Governments Investing in Communities Programme. They are all changing lives and our community for the better and really making the best of the resources they have.”
