Affordable homes project gets the vote on Lismore

-

Plans are coming together for two affordable homes on Lismore, writes Kathie Griffiths.

If all goes to schedule, the scheme could get full planning permission this summer.

Islanders, who voted in favour of siting the houses on land at Achnacroish, to the left of housing at Newfield Terrace, are being encouraged to stay involved and keep giving feedback before a planning bid goes in.

The Wee House Company has already been commissioned to design the houses, a pre-fab style that will be family-friendly, energy efficient and as practical as possible for island living.

Lismore Community Trust’s Andy Hough said community say is vital to the project’s success.

Ideas on designs are also crucial, such as needing an area straight in from the door where muddy wellies and wet outdoors gear can be left rather than be trailed through the house. A big-sized room, roomy enough for children to meet and play with others was also a helpful consideration, seeing as youngsters on the island do not have the option of other entertainment venues.

People are being encouraged to go along to the trust’s next AGM in June for more consultation and engagement.

Trust members will also be working on an allocation policy and how to run the properties that will be up for rent.

But one of the biggest tasks will be to secure funding to buy the land, once valued, and to get the properties built.

Spring next year is when the groundworks should start, the homes would be module-built at the Wee House factory and by summer the houses should be ready to welcome their first families.
